The role of the National Guard has changed drastically since the civil rights struggles of the 60s. Then, they were the military presence at home. Now, they are deployed around the world.

My husband was in the first National Guard unit that was sent into the Detroit riots in the 60s. He was there again after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King. Even several miles away, I was under a nightly curfew. After a time, I was allowed to visit him. It was a surreal moment for me to see our armed military patrolling the streets of an American city. They were in many of our cities during this tumultuous time.

I was so very fortunate that both my brothers who served in the Air Force and the Navy were never in harm’s way. I don’t know the pain of having a loved one killed in war.

Words can not adequately express my thanks and appreciation for the service of our Veterans. Their bravery makes us proud; their devotion makes us thankful; and their example should make us aspire to be better Americans.

With deepest thanks to our Veterans and their families for all that they have sacrificed and continue to do for our country…

Excellent point about our National Guard -- the members probably joined to patrol the local communities, help with national disasters, and practice war games. Although they never expected to actually have to fight a war, they stepped forward when called and their wives, children, parents and friends prayed for their safe return.

Thanks to all for what you continue to do for our country.

It was a turbulent era in our country. I will never forget the scenes from Detroit.

I was overseas much of the time during the 60's so I'm thankful for wonderful, informative stories like this. Thank you for sharing it.

Thanks for your comment Tish. The change in their role from then to now is striking. I was so lucky to never have anyone in harm's way.

We often forget about the National Guard, yet they are always the first ones there when trouble and disaster strikes our home soil.
