It is a process by which people can identify, represent, and enhance their community through a specific photographic technique. Emergent within the field of photovoice research have been health studies embracing diverse illness issues. The goal of this scoping review article was to describe the use of photovoice in mental illness, paying particular attention to the following: (1) the study design and methods, (2) empirical findings, and (3) dissemination strategies. Photovoice, which falls under the methodological umbrella of participatory action research (PAR), is a method of inquiry used to visually document and honor the knowledge(s), voices, and experiences of community members about particular issues affecting their lives. The first credited use of the photovoice method or process occurred in 1992 with women in the Yunnan Province of China as part of a Ford-Foundation-supported Yunnan Women's Reproductive Health and Development Program (YWRHDP)1,2.
