Armature winding in an electrical machine is that winding which carries the load current. In other words, it can also be defined as the winding in which emf is generated due to air gap field flux. It should be noted here that, air gap flux or working flux is produced due to flow of DC current in the field winding. Basically armature winding of a DC machine is wound by one of the two methods, lap winding wave winding. The difference between these two is merely due to the end connections and commutator connections of the conductor. To know how armature winding is done, it is essential to know the following terminologies - TYPES OF ARMATURE WINDINGS 1.OPEN COIL WINDING Open coil winding is that winding which does not close on itself. This type of winding is never employed in D.C machines, but is usually employed in A.C machines. 2.CLOSED COIL WINDING Closed coil winding is that winding which closes on itself. Some of the basic terms related to the Armature Winding are defined as follows: Turn: A turn consists of two conductors connected to one end by an end connector. Coil: A coil is formed by connecting several turns in the series. Armature winding can be defined as, an electrical machine in which emf can be generated because of the air gap field flux. It must be noted that the air gap is produced because of the DC current flow in the winding. In general, this winding is housed on slots of the stator & the field winding on rotor slots. The dc motor armature winding diagram is shown below. LAP WINDING Figure from Principles of Electric Machines and Power Electronics, 2ndEdition, P.C. Sen, John Wiley and Sons, 1997. Figure represents an unrolled lap winding of a dc armature, along with the commutator segments (bars) and stationary brushes. Coils are added in series until the end of the last coil joins the beginning of the first coil. Some of the terms common to armature windings are described below: 1. Conductor. A length of wire which takes active part in the energy- conversion process is a called a conductor. 2
