Beginner Tutor Criteria

What are the key criteria to consider when choosing a tutor for someone just starting to learn a foreign language? How can one learn about their teaching methodology and experience?

When I was at both school and uni, I didn't take my studies too seriously. Including learning English. If I could go back, I'd put more effort, but now I have to look for english tutors in San Jose to make up for what I lacked, improve my level and all that. So it's better to learn everything in college. You never know what exactly you're going to need and use.
